Beauty Rituals, Completing the Look

By Angela Zungri
Brides, you’ve looked, browsed, shopped, and it’s all coming together... the perfect dress, shoes and accessories. Your hairstyle and makeup are the ultimate accessories—they complete the look!

This year in bridal hairstyles, formal up-dos are taking a back seat to soft romantic curls, long waves and loose sets. Just take a look at the upcoming Academy Awards to get a glimpse of what is accompanying those magnificent formal gowns.

Bridal makeup is echoing the fashion wear. Clean, understated and natural, accenting the eyes and making the lips soft and romantic.

Beauty rituals take on a whole new meaning when considering the preparations for your wedding day. Consider the following as your guide:

SIX MONTHS PRIOR TO WEDDING DATE
This is a time for you to confirm your choice for hair salon, stylist and makeup artist. A consultation is normally complimentary and lasts about 15 minutes each for hair and makeup.

What to bring: pictures, pictures and more pictures! Tear images you like from magazines, catalogues, etc., and bring photos of your dress. Be open to suggestions but communicate your ideas too.

* Ask for references. Look at photos of their prior work.
* Confirm wedding day appointment availability, review policies and confirm costs.
* Schedule and secure your wedding day appointments (for yourself, the groom, parents, attendants, etc.).

THREE MONTHS PRIOR
A bridal practice session for both hair and makeup is crucial (this is normally a paying session). Work out the ideas that you and your stylists discussed during the consult. It is common to explore several options before deciding on the final look.

* Some questions to discuss include: What is your personal style? Where is the event taking place? Is there a theme?
* Bring your headpiece/veil; photos of your dress; fabric swatches; favorite cosmetic (if you have it); and camera (to capture the various styles during the session).

TWO WEEKS PRIOR
* Haircut (trim)
* Color: Subtle highlights/low lights or all-over semi-permanent color for shine and depth.

ONE WEEK PRIOR
Remember those maintenance beauty treatments that work beyond the wedding day, to the honeymoon.
* Eyebrow Wax
* Bikini/Brazilian Wax
* Leg Wax
* Facial: Nourishing, moisturizing

DAY PRIOR/DAY OF
* Manicure/Pedicure
* Massage
* Wedding Day Style
* Wedding Day Makeup

Grooming Tips Just for Guys

Grooms appear to have it easy. After all, what beauty rituals do guys go through for their wedding day? Get a haircut, shave and call it a day, right?
Well, hold on—guys are allowed to indulge a little too!

TWO WEEKS PRIOR
* Haircut: You don’t want to look too freshly cut, or too grown out and shaggy.
* Highlights: Just a few to accent the cut and style.

TWO DAYS PRIOR
* Massage
* Gentleman’s Facial: Moisturizing
* Neck Trim (and around ears if needed)

DAY OF
* Style Hair: Apply a gel, like Aveda’s Retexturizing Gel or Aveda’s Control Paste to give hair shine and keep it tame.
* Shave and Moisturize Skin: Use a product with SPF 15, like Aveda’s Tourmaline Protectant Lotion.
