Simply put, men’s wedding fashion is challenged. How is it that the girls get floor after floor of bridal wear and we boys feel blessed if we can scout out one small corner of black suits, with gray vests and bow ties? Snore... did you just fall asleep like I did?
Well, wake up! There’s great news, guys! Boundaries are being shattered and all rules broken in the world of wedding wear for men. The single hottest thing on my radar is the Sharpei tie. English in inspiration, it got its name when Hugh Grant woke up late one day for a public appearance and wound up with a rumpled scrunch of fabric in place of where his tie should be. Okay, not really, it probably has something more to do with the wrinkles of a Sharpei pup, but isn’t it more fun to think it was inspired by Hugh?
As with straight and bow ties, the Sharpei comes with a never-ending palette of color, texture and pattern. And partnered with some of the other great trends in men’s vests, jackets and trousers right now, every groom has the opportunity to step outside the black and white straight jacket and find his own unique voice.
A truly tailored and gorgeous couture suit is unforgettable. You pick the color; they come in every story. I’ve proudly suited up my boys this past year in everything from chocolate brown wool gabardine Versace, to powder blue silklinen Paul Smith three buttons, to a white silk satin Gucci. And for those of us born and bred on the surf and sand, I love the contradiction— and most importantly the comfort—of matching this couture with a pair of flip-flops. Hot! Of course, the footwear also goes with the continuing popularity of white linen, which has more handsome guys than ever draped in resort flowing, soft, cooling trousers and open-front shirts.
And accessories? Accessories seem to be one place that men have no fear. Which is fabulous, since the fashion field is full of incredible cuff links, bracelets, necklaces, collar pins, belt buckles, shoes, socks and hats.
The one trend I encourage all men to consider— at least in the privacy of their own dressing room—is the kilt. I know I’m in the Celtic minority. But let’s face it, we work out harder and play tougher than the girls (just made some enemies on that statement) and there’s no reason why they should get the monopoly on the market for showing a little calf. Nothing’s sexier than a man’s well-defined calf, sculpturally embraced with exquisite men’s hosiery ... I know, I know ... but be bold, be brave.
Throw open the door, guys— romantic Sharpei ties, bold color, couture suits and sexy kilts—it’s a new world for us! Rejoice!
